1. Goodbye California / Jolie HollandMy favorite song about leaving California, but if I hear it while away I want to come home.
2. Let’s Go Down / Family Of The Year A great new-ish song from a small-ish Los Angeles (Silverlake-based) band.
3. Chicago / Sufjan StevensI’ve never traveled in a van from California to New York via Chicago, but I can vicariously do so thru this great song off an even greater album. I’m in Chicago right now.
4. Band on the Run / Paul McCartneyThere’s something escapist that travel brings out in people. In this world, we’re trapped. Leaving the usual life is a form of breaking out of this mental prison. I worry that too much of a non-permanent life will decay us all. Regardless, we hitch up and go.
5. Radar Love / Golden EarringWhenever I think of just saying “fuck it,” and whenever I hit a long open stretch of road this howling bass line comes tapping at me. But when it comes to travel, what is enough? What is too much?
6. Free bird / Lynyrd SkynyrdWe get out onto a holiday because things are too profane and too typical. Being caged defines what is not free; and being free is only for birds in the sky.
7. Take Me Home / Toots & The MaytalsSpending a month in the Caribbean blew my mind. Countless reggae and calypso covers of American classics gave them a new feel. This semi-famous version of the John Denver classic, I think, is better than the original.
8. (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay / Otis ReddingOne of the things I will forever remember is bumming it on the beach with my ‘mates. $1 beers, ocean breezes and not a care in the world made our days off something to die for. But, though, like Redding, I need to make the 2000 mile trek back to the San Francisco Bay.
9. This Land Is Your Land / Woody GuthrieGuthrie’s song about our land between the coasts makes me want to travel to every tiny nestle that makes America.
10. Route 66 / Nat King ColeOne of these days I will travel the length of Route 66, from Santa Monica to Downtown Chicago. Let’s do it.
11. The Comeback (Big Slippa Remix by Ratatat) / Shout Out LoudsThese past few weeks have been insane for me. In both good and bad ways, I’ve changed, matured and moved on. I don’t know what I will do in the time to come, but I must do my best to live life free without this concern.
12. California Pt. 2 / Mason JenningsWhile I’m not going as far north as Jennings sings about, getting out of Los Angeles (and avoiding it all together) is a strange predicament for me. California is so much more than smog. A life full of music, books and open minds is the key; the clean air will save our souls.
